8 Surprising Things That Could Be Making Your Hair Greasy

If you’ve been experiencing greasy hair despite your best efforts to cleanse and style your tresses effectively, allow us to explain. Even if you follow a fool-proof haircare regimen by the books, there are still so many outside influences that can mess up your tresses. We know how annoying that is, but lucky for you we’ve compiled a list of 8 surprising things that could be making your hair greasy so you can avoid them at all costs.

8 Surprising Things That Could Be Making Your Hair Greasy

1. Over-Washing

Yes we know, you wash your hair to cleanse the grease, but no, it doesn’t help. Unfortunately, daily shampooing can strip your hair of its natural oils – so it produces more in a bid to replace them. Try cutting back on washing your hair to every other day at least, or 2-3 times a week. Your hair will thank you in the long run.

2. Touching your hair too often

Fiddling with your hair (whether out of boredom or habit) is perhaps the biggest culprit of all in promoting greasy tresses. Touching your hair too often transfers oils from your fingertips to your strands, ultimately resulting in residue grease.

3. Your hairbrush is dirty

Your hairbrush can harbour all sorts of grime including stale styling products, dust and dry shampoo. A clogged-up brush will transfer these onto the hair, making it look and feel dirty. Cleaning your hairbrush on a regular basis will dramatically reduce the greasiness of your strands.

4. Over-conditioning

Whilst you may think that layering up the conditioner is beneficial to the health of your hair, it is in fact another grease-giving culprit. You may not be washing it out properly or you may be using a conditioner that is too heavy for your hair type, which can weigh it down. Avoid placing your conditioner all over your hair, focusing on the ends to avoid oily roots.

5. Over-brushing

Brushing your hair too much can stimulate oil production, which at first looks glossy, but soon looks greasy. Again, stick to detangling the lengths and ends if you’ve got an obsessive hair brushing habit.

6. Your hair brush is full of hair

Whilst a hairbrush full of hair might not seem like an obvious offender, a clogged brush will transfer grease from old strands back onto your clean hair. Ew.

7. You’re using the wrong products

Choosing styling products that aren’t compatible with your hair can cause an increase in grease. Look for lightweight formulas and avoid ones that promise ‘shine’ and ‘moisture’ which would be better suited to dry and dull hair types.

8. Product build-up that needs detoxing

Styling products can cause the strands to become clogged up and increase excess oil production in the scalp. If you’re a dry shampoo junkie, you might want to give your hair a detox by using a clarifying shampoo 2-4 times a month. It is the gateway to healthy hair, after all.
